Funding Your Gap Year
Scholarships, 529 College Savings and Other Funding Options
Options for funding
There are many ways to fund your Berridge Programs experience. Berridge Programs is proud to be a fully accredited gap year program with the Gap Year Association. As a GYA accredited provider, you can earn college credit on our programs. Enrolling in the for-credit option means that a number of funding options for your gap year experience will become open you that would not be available if you were not pursuing college credit. Students enrolling in the for-credit option are eligible for:
-
529 College Savings Plans
-
Federal Grants and Loans (for those currently enrolled in college)
529 College Savings Plans
Participants can use 529 College Savings Plan funds to pay for their program tuition when they enroll in the college credit option. Check with your plan administrator to see if these funds can be paid directly to the program provider (Berridge Programs) or need to be paid to the school of record (University of Montana) Please note that if tuition fees need to be paid through U of M, you must enroll for the credit option 6 weeks before your program start date. In addition, that U of M will charge a fee of 8.75% to process your 529 funds. If they can be paid directly to us, the program provider, you can enroll in the credit option 2 weeks before your program start date and no fees will be chraged.
Steps for Using 529 College Savings Plan Funds:
Step 1: Complete your Berridge Programs zoom interview and application.
Step 2: Once you are accepted on the program, email your Berridge Programs academic advisor to register your intention to pursue college credit. Be sure to contact your plan administrator beforehand so you can inform us if you need your tuition fees to be paid to the U of M in order to qualify.
Step 3: Select your UM courses from those listed above and complete the enrollment form.
Step 4: Pay a $1950 tuition fee for your course credit. This is in addition to your regular program fees. This is a flat fee which covers as many courses as you would like to take.
Step 5: The Gap Year Association and your UM Instructor of Record will then get in touch with you directly with your course syllabus, next steps and work with you throughout the program.
Step 6: Submit all course work, journals and papers directly to your Instructor of Record within 30 days after your program completion date.
Step 7: Official grading will be completed by your Instructor of Record. You will receive your transcript directly from the University of Montana 3-4 weeks after you have received your grades.
Federal Grants and Loans
To access Federal Financial Aid, you’ll need to be a matriculated student at a college/university, so this option is only available to students taking a break from college studies, not those who are deferring the start of college. You may need to set up a Consortium Agreement between your current college and our school of record to access federal funds. This will allow you to remain a current student at your college/university and receive financial aid in the same way that you currently are. Consortium agreements typically include pre-approval of credit transfer.
Federal Pell Grant
The Pell Grant is a need-based grant for full-time undergraduate students with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) below the limit determined each year.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunities Grant (SEOG grant)
This need-based grant is awarded to those students demonstrating the greatest need. Students typically must qualify for the Federal Pell Grant to receive an SEOG Grant.
Federal Stafford Loan
The Stafford Loan is in your name and is available to all students, regardless of financial need. If the loan is subsidized, the government will pay the interest while you are in school. Payment of the principle itself will begin six months after graduation.
Parent PLUS Loans for Undergraduate Students
PLUS loans are available to parents of dependent undergraduate students. Parents may borrow up to the full cost of your education, less the amount of any other financial aid you receive. There is a minimal credit check required for the PLUS loan, so a good credit history is required.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
If you receive a federal Pell grant, you are eligible to apply for a Gilman Scholarship. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit.
Berridge Scholarships
For those not eligible for the funding options above, Berridge Programs offers a range of scholarship opportunities. Our scholarships award a percentage of tuition and are based on financial need. Please note that we do not offer full scholarships, and we do not offer Merit scholarships. We are looking for students who demonstrate strong financial need, have an excellent academic record and have experience with being a leader and/or role model through extracurriculars or work experience.
You do not need to be enrolled in the for-credit option to be eligible for a scholarship.
Financial Need Scholarship
A flexible award for a percentage of the program tuition based on demonstrated financial need. The award ranges from 30 – 50% of the program tuition for our gap year programs and 15 - 30% of the program tuition for our summer program.
